Blog Post 🍺 Exploring the Haunted Skirrid Inn

Episode 192 of The Shadow Frequency

By Juniper Ravenwood

🕯️ A Tavern Steeped in Shadows

The Skirrid Inn in Monmouthshire, Wales 🏴, isn’t just a quaint 12th-century pub 🍻—it’s a place where history and the paranormal collide ⚔️👻. In Episode 192 of The Shadow Frequency, “Haunted Inn's Ghosts Shatter Silence,” we dove into the eerie legacy of this ancient tavern, where over 180 souls met their end on a makeshift gallows 🪢.

As producer, I was thrilled 😱 to unearth this case, and Matt Wilson’s storytelling 🎙️ brought its ghostly inhabitants to life. If you haven’t listened yet, prepare for a journey into a place where the past refuses to stay silent 🕰️.

🩸 A Bloody History

Built in the 1100s, the Skirrid Inn served as more than a watering hole 🍺—it was a courtroom ⚖️ and execution site during a brutal era. A blackened beam in the upper floor doubled as a gallows 🪢, where criminals, traitors, and the unfortunate were hanged before a watching crowd.

Among them was John Crowther 🏴‍☠️, a 17th-century highwayman whose spirit lingers with vengeance 👀. The weight of these violent deaths seems to have seeped into the inn’s very walls 🧱, creating a paranormal hotspot that draws ghost hunters and thrill-seekers alike 👻🔦.

👻 Ghostly Encounters That Defy Explanation

The stories from the Skirrid Inn are enough to make your skin crawl 🥶:

  • 🍷 Glasses flying off shelves and shattering against walls

  • 👣 Heavy footsteps pacing empty corridors

  • 🪢 The sensation of a rope tightening around your neck

  • 🎙️ Paranormal investigators capturing whispers and eerie malfunctions

The “hanging room” is particularly active, radiating dread 🕯️. One bartender even witnessed a glass lift off the counter and hurl itself across the room—alone 😨.

🤔 A Moment of Doubt Amid the Darkness

Matt offered a nod to skepticism 🧐, suggesting creaky floors 🪵 or drafty windows 🌬️ might explain some events. Could suggestion, fueled by grim history, create ghostly illusions? Maybe. But when glasses hover and shadows loom 🌑, logic begins to fray.

🪦 Why the Skirrid Inn Haunts Us

What makes the Skirrid Inn compelling is its emotional weight 💔. These spirits—if real—aren’t peaceful. They’re angry 😡, sorrowful 😢, or desperate. John Crowther’s whispered name in the stairwell, the creak of an unseen rope 🪢, the sudden chill under the gallows beam 🥶—these are echoes of human suffering, not just ghost stories.

Is the inn a spiritual prison 🏚️, or is the land itself cursed? Whatever the truth, it challenges us to confront what happens to a soul in its final, terrifying moments ⚰️.
